Litomyšl castle and brewery

Litomyšl Castle is a precious example of a remake of an Italian renaissance chateau for the weather conditions to the north of the Alps. It was built in mid-16^th century by Vratislav of Pernštejn. In 17^th and 18^th centuries, the building underwent some baroque adjustments on the request new owners made by renowned baroque artists. The unique thing is the family baroque theatre built in 1797 with a mechanic system of set-piece changing, which is one of the five conserved theatres of this kind in Europe. In 1999 the castle was inscribed on the UNESCO World Herritage List.

The castle cellars are accessible and host an exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek and also another exhibit, the wax heart for Václav Havel. The halls of the second floor are where the exhibition rooms of the Municipal Picture Gallery are located.

The castle is surrounded by a French garden on its west side and by an English park from the north. The buildings of the castle area include castle brewery (with the native flat of Czech composer Bedřich Smetana), riding hall, stables and carriage hall, which, in recent years, have undergone a reconstruction with the use of some modern-art features.
